Fonseca Porto Terra Bella, $23
Chocolate is hard to pair with wine, though many people will try to make it happen for Valentine's Day next week.
Here's a tip: Try a ruby Port. Ruby Port is the simplest sort of Port, ready to drink as soon as you buy it (unlike vintage Ports, which take years to age into tastiness). Its smooth, grapey flavors are sweet and dark enough to match chocolate's intensity, especially dark chocolates that have a bitter edge.
Check out Terra Bella, a new Port made with organically grown grapes and fortified with organically grown brandy from Fonseca. It's vibrantly fruity, the glowing purple liquid edged with peppery spice. It's intense enough to be dessert in itself, but Valentine's Day is no time for restraint. Go for the chocolate. They'll be delicious together. Just don't tell your friends in other states: So far, Terra Bella is available only in Colorado.
