Albet i Noya Cava Brut Reserva Can Vendrell

(Imported by Organic Vintners, Boulder, CO; about $18)

Last week, when I was asked on Channel 7 (Denver) if there were any good sparkling wines under $20, Albet i Noya's Can Vendrell Cava immediately came to mind. I thought of it first because it's from Spain, and Spain excels at affordable sparkling wines - Cava is what fuels Barcelona's lively bar and restaurant scene. And though there are a great many excellent Cavas for less than $20, Albet i Noya sticks out because its owners have farmed their vineyards organically since the early 1980s.

So not only can you feel good about the lack of chemicals that went into the making of this wine, but you get a crisp bubbly with fine bubbles and a mouthwatering tart apple flavor. Pour it over the holidays with salted nuts, cheese and crackers or smoked salmon - and tuck away a few bottles for those exhausted, post-holiday dinners of take-out Chinese.
