Jean-Luc Colombo 2003 Côtes du Rhône Blanc Les Figuières

(Imported by Palm Bay Imports, Boca Raton, FL; about $16)

Last week, this section was all about chilling out in summer’s heat. This week, I offer you a wine that will take the chill off a cool summer evening yet match the freshness of summertime food: Jean-Luc Colombo’s Les Figuières. Based on the floral grape viognier, this smells like a garden in full bloom, with sweet scents of honeysuckle and herbal notes like thyme. The flavors are just as lush, its silken texture wrapping notes of almond paste and lemon peel around the tongue like a blanket. Mouthfilling yet dry, it will stand up to grilled pork chops (especially with a side of grilled peaches), or a creamy corn chowder. Buy it by the case: this could sub in for a Rhône white that costs three times the price, and it’ll keep you warm all throughout the winter, too.
